Time to leave the country again...

Earlier this year my dear friends of the White House gang presented me with an early 40th birthday present (I know hard to believe that I am about to turn 40), airfares to Bologna, Italy, two nights accommodation and a Ferrari tour. Now it is time to make it all happen...

So once again I repack my backpack, grabbed by passport and left London. I flew out of Gatwick Airport heading for Bologna. I have discovered one thing on this trip... I am very good at being able to sleep as I travel, once again I slept most of the flight, waking to look out the window to see snow capped mountains somewhere in Europe.

Bologna is a small place in the North-East of Italy and is known as La Rossa, for the Red tint that is seen in it's buildings and I have to say is true to it's name.

I headed out in the heat to explore (it was 35 degrees but a drier heat then I had experienced in Hong Kong, the last time I had experienced the heat). After the grandeur of Paris I found that the buildings of Bologna had a beauty in their very simple design.

A large numbers of the buildings have porticos, covered walkways, they were first built as extensions for extra accommodation for students. Some of the porticos are magnificent on their dome design while others for the artwork that adorns them.

I walked through a park, down many porticos and lane ways, making my way to the famous Torre degle Asinelli, the two towers, these towers were built in 1109 and 1119.

After walking around the streets I ended up at Piazza Maggiore, the main square of the town where I enjoyed a beer, some pizza and an old black and white Italian war movie for a while before heading home for a spa and what I hope will be a good night's sleep before my big day.
